“For the red, white, and blue, and the freedom we deserve”

It might be a fridge-essential, a tailgate hit, the perfect Beirut can, or an off-the-beaten-path brew.  Maybe it came from a large production company, a local microbrewery, or from over the oceans. The only common denominator is that it has to be beer. So crack open that cold one in your hand and listen in, maybe just maybe I’ll sway you onto your new favorite American pastime.

The Elusive Unicorn
The Elusive Unicorn

Oh yes, oh yes I did. It took me over a year to procure of a case of Dogfish 120. This extremely rare “unicorn” of beers is only brewed 2 or 3 times a year and in very limited quantities. For any IPA lover out there, this is a must find.

Old Horizontal is an 11% beer that tastes more like a 4% beer. It garnered a 91/100 on Beer Advocate, the world’s foremost web resource on beer. It lived up to its “outstanding” rating. It pours a dark mahogany color and is dark enough to scare some away. But don’t fear my beer-drinking friends; this ale is worth a try.

Pre-gaming X-Mas Shopping

Anchor Steam Brewing has been producing beer for since 1871 when German immigrants searching for gold went after hops instead. Since 1975, Anchor Brewing has produced a winter seasonal beer starting in November and running through mid-January.

Goose Island is a fantastic brewery located within reach of Chicago’s iconic Wrigley Field. Brewing since 1988, Goose Island has been making over 50 fantastic craft beers including Honker’s Ale, Ten Hills Pale Ale, and 312 Urban Wheat Ale. I have shared a variety case with the 460 roommates this past year and was very impressed.

Flying Fish was founded in 1995 (which almost 20 years ago, damn I’m old) and brews out in “Dirty Jersey”. But their beer is anything but dirty, as it has won numerous awards since they began to add hops to water.
