My favorite part of the week. Cold. Hard. FAILS. If you’re new to THE THUNDERBLOG, Matty D previews each NFL week and I wrap them up: the LOCKS and FAILS. They’re named those because we each make our picks and compete each week. This is the 4th year we’ve been picking each other: Matt won in 2013 by 1 week when we started the blog midseason but I’ve won in 2014 and 2015 with me CRUSHING MPD last year 11-5-1. Not surprising that Matt failed to mention that in the Week 1 Locks. I am the KING of pick’em. Matt said after last season that this is “The Year of the Truth,” but let’s see if my dominance continues in 2016.
Week 1 Cold Hard FAILS
By now you’ve seen the scores so I’m going to show who we picked…
Broncos squeeze by Panthers 21-20 – We both picked the Panthers: 0-1 G-Man/0-1 Matty D – The Denver D picked it right back up after carrying the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Cam Newtown still played out of his mind even though he almost lost it from targeting.
Eagles soar over Browns 29-10 – We both picked the Birds: 1-1 G-Man/1-1 Matty D – Wentzmania is here! I was at the Linc for the fantastic scene for 9/11 with VP Biden followed by the surprising debut of Carson Wentz. We’ll see if it can continue going forward.
Packers hold off Jas 27-23 – We both picked Green Bay: 2-1 G-Man/2-1 Matty D – Shockingly close debut for the Pack while the Jags made an early statement.
Ravens down Bills 13-7 – We both picked Baltimore: 3-1 G-Man/3-1 Matty D
Texans drop Bears 23-14 – We both picked Houston: 4-1 G-Man/4-1 Matty D – Osweiler had a great debut for the Texans as they had to dig themselves out of a hole against the Bears.
Bucs beat Falcons 31-24 – I took Tampa Bay while Matt took Atlanta: 5-1 G-Man/4-2 Matty D – “Jamo gets it done like he did when he was at FSU” -me in the Locks. HA! Matt doubted Jameis but I believed. He looked SHARP. Tampa’s D was able to hold off Julio.
Bengals edge Jets 23-22 – We both picked Cincy: 6-1 G-Man/5-2 Matty D
Raiders gamble over Saints 35-34 – I picked Oakland while Matt picked New Orleans: 7-1 G-Man/5-3 Matty D – My boy Jack Del Rio made the big decision to forgo overtime and win! Michael Crabtree’s resurgence is off and running in 2016
Chiefs comeback over Chargers 33-27 in OT – We both picked KC: 8-1 G-Man/6-3 Matty D
Seahawks survive Dolphins 12-10 — We both picked Seattle: 9-1 G-Man/7-3 Matty D – Might have been a Week 1 trap game looking back on it. The Phins wanted to start off 2016 on the right note and everyone was thinking more about the Seahawks’ pregame than the Seahawks’ supposed blow out.
Lions win shootout in Indy 39-35 – We both picked Indy: 9-2 G-Man/7-4 Matty D – Both Stafford and Luck looked great, the Lions stepped up big to win on the road.
Vikings shut down Titans 25-15 – Matt picked the Vikings while I took Tennessee: 9-3 G-Man/8-4 Matty D – I was right to discount the QB Play and the ground game never showed up like Matt thought. The Minnesota defense helped the Vikings walk away with the win in the 4th forcing two crucial turnovers.
Giants outlast Cowboys 20-19 — I had the Cowboys while Matt picked the Giants: 9-4 G-Man/9-4 Matty D – We end up tied. If Terrence Williams gets out of bounds, I have a chance at the win. Dak did get pretty, prettttay close to spiking it though.
Pats pull out W in the desert, win 23-21 over Cards — We both picked Arizona: 9-5 G-Man/9-5 Matty D
Steelers blast Redskins 38-16 – We both picked Pittsburgh: 10-5 G-Man/10-5 Matty D
49ers blank Rams 28-0 – We both picked LA – Carlos Hyde ONCE AGAIN had a monster Monday Night but this is the highlight of last night
We tie Week 1 at 10-6, Weekly Series starts 0-0-1
G-Man Overall: 10-6

Well we start off on a tie in 2016, bringing us back to our early roots. We had been good at having an odd number of competing picks but this week seemed to be pretty obvious for pick’em. The four one-point games is a league record for the opening weekend so at least we were entertained. Matty D will be back later this week with the Cold Hard Locks for Week 2, until then…
