Ron Hextall To Be Flyers’ New GM

(CSN Philly) – Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers will announce that Hextall will replace Paul Holmgren as general manager while Holmgren moves to team president, according to a source. The title of team president formerly belonged to Peter Luukko, who resigned last December. It was Holmgren who brought Hextall back into the organization last summer as assistant general manager and director of hockey operations. Hextall, who reigned in goal for the Flyers through the mid-1980s and into the late 1990s, was assistant general manager to Dean Lombardi in Los Angeles for seven years and was partially responsible for helping secure key players who helped the Kings win the Stanley Cup in 2012.

Hextall Gif

Thanks to the EP, JSB, for sending me the gif. That’s your 1987 Conn Symthe Trophy Winner ladies and gentlemen.

HERE WE GO! Not that I didn’t like Holmgren but Hextall knew how Lombardi could go out and get Jeff Carter without giving up the farm in 2012. Hextall could make a serious splash during this offseason –almost as serious as the Pronger trade in 2009– and the Flyers may not have to give up anything huge. Hextall continues the trend of former Flyers in management positions; we’ve seen that go both ways in terms of success. Personally, I firmly believe Hextall and Berube will pair well together as they were teammates on and off in the late ’80s (Berube went between the Flyers and the AHL Hershey Bears multiple times). And who knows, maybe Hextall will show Steve Mason on how to pull this off…

Official Announcement will be at 11:30 this morning.
