Sochi Women’s Hockey Roundup: Quarterfinals

Your shot of Olympic Hockey to go with your vodka
February 15th, 2014

The Quarterfinals of the Women’s Tournament today, the losers move into the consolation tournament that begins tomorrow.

Sweden downs Finland 4-2 Group B represent! The Fins were outshooting the Swedes 23-19 and had 1-0 through two periods. They succumbed to something I always give the Flyers a lot of flak for, not making adjustments. Team Sweden came out in the third knowing exactly what changes they needed to make while Finland didn’t adjust at all. Sweden outshot Finland 13-8 in the third, outscoring them 4-1. Swedish goalie Valentina Wallner stopped 29 of 31 shots she saw. Team Sweden moves on to face our ladies in Red, White, and Blue Monday morning at 7:30.

Switzerland blanks Russia 2-0 Bad day for Russian hockey. The Russians outshot the Swiss and had four power play opportunities but Swiss goalie Florence Schelling stopped all 41 shots she saw. The Swiss move on to face Group A winner Team Canada Monday at noon. The Canadians crushed the Swiss 5-0 when they played last Saturday.

Consolation Bracket:

With the losses, Finland and Russia fall into the consolation which begins tomorrow. Finland will face Germany tomorrow at 3am. The Fins and Germans did not play in group play as they were in different groups. Except Finland to bounce back with a win and move on to the 5th Place Game. Russia will play Japan tomorrow at noon. The Japanese kept the previous close, but ultimately fell to the Russian 2-1. Expect the home-town girls to bounce back BIG TIME.
