ALUMNI WATCH: CJ McCollum Played 10 Minutes in the Blazers’ Rough Loss to the Grizzlies Last Night

The Portland Trail Blazers’ five-game home win streak was snapped last night at hands of Zach Randolph and the Memphis Grizzlies. Randolph put up a double-double scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as the Grizzlies crushed the Blazers 98-81. It wasn’t as close as he thought, but Matty D called this result in yesterday’s NBA Lightning Strike.

CJ saw ten minutes in last night’s contest. He first came into the game with 2:50 left in the first quarter. CJ’s first direct impact on the game came with about 30 seconds in the first quarter when he fouled Memphis’ Courtney Lee; Lee would make one of the two resulting free-throws. On the very next possession, CJ would take his first shot from 21-feet that miss off the rim. CJ would stay in the game to start the second quarter and immediately fire a three-pointer. While it wouldn’t go in, Joel Freeman would corral the rebound and put away the put-back. About two minutes later, CJ would pick up his second foul on James Johnson; Johnson would nail both free throws and CJ would leave the game for the rest of the first half with the Blazers trailing by 12 points. CJ’s stats through the end of the first half: 0-2 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 2 PF

McCollum would re-enter the game with 4:16 left in the third quarter. About a minute and a half later, Courtney Lee would steal the ball from CJ for McCollum’s one turnover on the night. CJ’s next direct impact on the game wouldn’t come until end the of the third when he would fire a 26-foot buzzer beater attempt. CJ would be subbed out to start the fourth quarter but would return to the game with a minute and a half left in the game. In that final 1:30, CJ would pick his third foul and would miss his fourth and final shot attempt of the night. CJ’s stats last night: 10:43 Min, Zero Pts (0-4 FG, 0-2 3Pt), 1 TO, 3 PF

“Some games you just throw away the tape and move on. Tonight was one of those games …”

Overall, the Blazers didn’t play very well as a team, as shown by the 18-point loss and by the above quote from the team’s official Facebook page. CJ’s first game without a single point scored as well as his second straight game with 3 personal fouls; this was definitely the worst game so far in his young career.

The Blazers have a few days off to regroup as their next game will be on Saturday night when the Toronto Raptors come to town. CJ will most likely be guarding DeMar DeRozan; he averages 37:41 minutes, 21.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.2 turnovers in 43 games.
